MAU (UP): Two persons were injured when members of two communities indulged in heavy stone pelting in Astupura and Pyarepura areas in this communally sensitive town over a trivial incident on Tuesday morning, a top police official said.

The trouble sparked off when a member of a particular community was knocked down by a cyclist in Astupura area, District Police Chief Sujeet Kumar Pandey said.

The two communities fought a pitched battle in which two persons sustained injuries, he said adding 25 people had been taken into custody in this connection.

Security personnel in strength had been deployed in the areas to maintain peace and the situation was under control, Pandey said. The town was rocked by communal violence during Dussehra festivals in which 12 people had died and scores others injured.

Meanwhile, the three-member committee probing the communal riots on Tuesday visited the affected areas and received applications from the victims.

Revenue Board Chairperson Neera Yadav, who is heading the team, said the committee would be handing over its report to the government before the commencement of the budget session of the Vidhan Sabha in March next.
